Four well-known formulas estimate a healthy weight from your height and sex. See each result and the average in kilograms and pounds.
How the ideal weight calculator works
The formulas add a set amount for every inch of height above 5 feet. Devine: men 50 kg + 2.3 kg per inch, women 45.5 kg + 2.3 kg. Robinson: men 52 + 1.9, women 49 + 1.7. Miller: men 56.2 + 1.41, women 53.1 + 1.36. Hamwi: men 48 + 2.7, women 45.5 + 2.2.
Example
A man who is 175 cm (about 5 ft 9 in) gets 70.5 kg from Devine, 68.9 kg from Robinson, 68.7 kg from Miller and 72.0 kg from Hamwi. The average is about 70.0 kg (154.4 lb).
Frequently asked questions
Are these formulas the same as a healthy BMI range?
No. Some of them were created for medication dosing and rough guidance. A healthy BMI range of 18.5 to 24.9 gives a wider band of weights.
Do they apply to everyone?
They ignore muscle mass, frame size and age, so athletes and older adults may differ. Treat the result as a rough guide and ask a doctor for personal advice.
Why do the formulas give different answers?
Each was developed from different data and assumptions, so they differ by a few kilograms.
